The End of Writing is an installation which questions the multiple possible ends of writing. Pascal Dombis considers writing as a living organism. Born a few thousand years ago, it has evolved in step with the tools that have carried it. Today, the ultra-rapid and largely uncontrolled expansion of generative AI constitutes an immediate threat: it weakens human writing and could soon render it obsolete. The installation stages this potential obsolescence through an algorithmic video environment composed of streams of film excerpts focused on handwriting and the presence of the hand. A dialogue between myself and a generative chatbot AI explores different scenarios: disappearance, mutation, but also the reemergence of writing as an act of resistance against machines. A site-specific environment of curtains made of cut-out letters, sometimes forming fleeting words, extends this reflection on the future of the written word.
